Eastern Stars Concert Band

Making music made easy
Eastern Stars Concert Band is made up of several concert bands and has around 100 members. Barrie Turner (musical director) assists many new learners (a few adults and many children) to get started in a band as well as seeing where other more experienced players may fit into the more advanced senior bands.

Barrie is an experienced music teacher. Weekly rehearsals are held at Pakuranga Int. School. All age groups are catered for from about 8 years old up. Instruments include various brass, wind (flute, clarinet, sax etc), percussion and bass guitar. Some instruments are provided by Eastern Stars Concert Band and others can be hired from the band. Parents are encouraged to learn alongside their children if they wish or to simply be supportive to the band. The annual fee is very low, to enable almost anyone a chance to learn music.

Many South Auckland schools do not have enough instrumental students or qualified staff to offer a large ensemble experience and/or they only offer a limited range of intruments. Most community bands are too advanced for younger or less experienced sudents to join.  Eastern Stars are unique in our area. We aim to fill the gap and provide a complete experience particularly for school children wanting to broaden their musical experience, and adults who want to enjoy the gift of music and give back to the community.
Eastern Stars Concert Band (Cadets/Youth) rehearse on Tuesday evenings. Eastern Stars Concert Band rehearse on Wednesday evenings (7.00 pm) at Pakuranga Intermediate hall during term time.  We perform at least four concerts per year, including Anzac /Autumn, Winter, Spring & Christmas. We also play various Christmas parades (Papatoetoe, Ellerslie, Panmure, Howick Midnight Madness), as well as attending music festivals/competitions (Matamata and/or Nationals). We play at various school galas (Wakaaranga, Elm Park) etc.  We frequently fundraise for disaster victims and involve the community as much as possible by doing playouts at local resthomes. We are based in Pakuranga, Auckland, N. Z.
Eastern Stars Concert Band is a family friendly band. We welcome visitors to our rehearsals.
